A culture of innovation

Founded by Louis Hachette in 1826, Hachette Livre has grown by channeling its innovative spirit.

A core part of the Group and its imprints’ DNA is our creativity and ability to invent new formats, content and tools.

Louis Hachette, a pioneer of modern publishing.

Hachette owes its growth and success to its founder’s innovative spirit.

In the 1850s, Louis Hachette became the first publisher to offer to send all his publications to booksellers, who could return any books not sold during the year. The initiative was a precursor to the sale-or-return model used today, giving booksellers greater flexibility as well as a more central role in distribution.

During the same period, he sought to develop more high-quality works on a variety of subjects by becoming one of the first publishers to surround himself with collection directors. His head of travel guides, Adolphe Joanne, developed the iconic Guides Bleus series still published by the Group today.

In 1852, Louis Hachette revolutionized the publishing world by opening the first bookstalls in rail stations, a bold idea that brought his books to a wide audience, namely travelers in search of new reading material.

This initiative, which was both pragmatic and groundbreaking, is a perfect illustration of his commitment to bringing culture and reading within everyone’s grasp, at every time and place.

From their beginnings up to this day, Louis Hachette and his surccessors have utilized their strategic vision and creativity to develop new services, reach new markets, and bring together publishers with a rich history and their sights set on the future.

Envisioning the future of publishing

Hachette Livre is laying the groundwork for the future of publishing by creating new content, designing new tools, and devising new production methods.

Enhancing the enjoyment of reading

Hachette Livre uses new technologies to offer interactive content and create more varied gateways into the world of reading.

The Group was one of the first in the publishing industry to enter the podcasting arena. Today, Hachette Livre imprints across all segments—education, tourism, literature, and more—produce audio content.

Hachette Livre was one of the first publishers to form a partnership with Spotify for broader access to audiobooks, first in the United States and the United Kingdom, and later in France, in 2024.

Improving copyright protection and fighting piracy through technology

In 2011, Hachette Livre became the first publisher in France to set up an anti-piracy monitoring department. The Group remains at the forefront of the publishing world in that regard, through a combination of monitoring tools and the work of a specialized team.

Websites, online retailers, and social media are scrutinized to detect and flag unauthorized use of content from books, box sets, and games published worldwide by Hachette Livre.

The Group continually works to improve its tools and processes, in order to maintain its prominent role in the fight against piracy and protect the rights of its authors. In France, for example, Hachette Livre handles millions of cases of piracy each year involving books published by the Group and its partners.

Turning to the digital world to discover talented authors and promote reading

A pioneer in the use of technology to find talented writers, Hachette Livre has discovered many authors on platforms such as Wattpad, TikTok and Instagram. The Group keeps a close watch on emerging practices and on readers’ tastes, exploring new places in search of fresh voices.

To identify these emerging writers and themes, the Group also relies on exclusive, effective data management tools developed in-house by our research and development team.

Hachette Livre actively invests in digital solutions that help build closer ties with readers and promote reading to the public. Today, the Group is among the publishers most present on social media, where it posts a variety of content in step with market trends.

In 2025, in keeping with its pioneering spirit, Hachette Livre continued its work to rekindle the joy of reading, especially among young adults, by launching its first official store on TikTok Shop in France.

Improving content accessibility

Hachette Livre strives to ensure everyone can access its content. The Group is a signatory of the Charter for Accessible Publishing, established by the Accessible Books Consortium, which sets out eight principles for the production of eBooks accessible to people with a print disability. Hachette Livre keeps pace with new technology developments and continues to form partnerships aimed at improving the accessibility of its content.

Research and development to boost accessibility and interoperability

Hachette Livre is a founding member of the EDRLab, the European Digital Reading Lab, a non-profit formed by publishing industry stakeholders to develop technologies that improve the accessibility and interoperability of digital resources.
Hachette Livre took part in updating the ePub (short for “electronic publication”) format to ePub 3, which has enabled the production of more accessible books for the visually impaired.

In addition, the Group also helped develop Digital Rights Management (DRM) protection that is interoperable and can be used by the entire industry. DRM encompasses all the security techniques used to safeguard access to and use of an eBook, in order to protect copyright holders.

Today, Hachette Livre continues to pursue accessibility research and development through software such as Ebook Factory, which automatically updates eBooks to the latest ePub standards. Projects are also underway to develop AI assistance for image descriptions in eBooks.

Partnerships for easier access to reading

In collaboration with Mobidys, several children’s book publishers are converting titles from their catalog to the Frog or Daisy formats, as audiobooks or eBooks, to make them accessible to readers who are dyslexic or have a learning disability.

Hachette Livre has partnered with the National Library of France’s Platon platform to provide publications as part of the disability exception to copyright protection.

Novels and essays are available in the natively accessible ePub format, which can be used by a Braille reader or via a “text to speech” audio transcription.

Publishers upload their books to the National Library’s Platon platform to create files suitable for use by authorized organizations.

Innovating for education

The education and textbook sector is an integral part of Hachette Livre’s history—the Group supplied the first alphabet books to primary schools in 1833.

Ever since, the Group has continued to grow and innovate to advance education and access to knowledge. All our textbook publishers—in the United Kingdom, France, and Spain—develop innovative solutions for in-class learning and homework.

In France, the e-Education Department guides our various imprints in the leap to digital technology with an array of new developments and partnerships.
