1001 Nuits, La Plage and Hachette Éducation recognized at the Trophées de l’édition 2023

On 3 April, Éditions 1001 Nuits, La Plage and Hachette Éducation received awards at the Trophées de l’édition 2023.

Organized by Livres Hebdo, the awards spotlight publishing professionals who have contributed to long-term excellence in the industry by making bold and creative choices.

Éditions 1001 Nuits won the Trophée de la Valorisation du fonds (Backlist Promotion Award).

This award goes to the publishing house which has done the best job breathing new life into treasures from its backlist. 1001 Nuits won for revamping its Petite Collection.

Maurizio Medico and Nata Rampazzo created La Petite Collection in 1993 based on a revolutionary concept imported from Italy: “a book for 10 francs”. Today the collection includes over 600 titles in a wide range of fields (literature, humanities and the fine arts from ancient times through to today).

Since 2020, Éditions 1001 Nuits has revamped La Petite Collection to make it the fruit of its collaboration with booksellers. Working with four bookshops, it put together an editorial committee and created a collaborative website where 125 booksellers select which titles will be reprinted and what their future covers will look like.

This approach has brought the Petite Collection backlist into the spotlight and showcased several of its gems.

Éditions La Plage won the Trophée du Développement Durable (Sustainable Development Award).

This award recognizes a publishing house which has made environmentally friendly practices an integral part of its business. Éditions La Plage won for its approach to environmental responsibility.

For over 25 ans, eco-design has been an integral part of every aspect of La Plage’s business, from editorial to manufacturing and marketing.

The editorial team chooses environmentalist themes and content. It chooses to publish books that will last, to create a backlist that will be relevant more than a decade later. And it caps production at 50 titles per year.

As for manufacturing, La Plage aims to continually improve its process for the most environmentally friendly design possible. La Plage stands out for its bold commitments: it uses environmentally friendly raw materials, optimizes formats to negate paper waste, limits its print runs to match demand, reduces plastic use and prints as locally as possible to reduce its carbon footprint.

In terms of marketing, La Plage does not do point-of-sale advertising and invites recipients of its newsletters to reduce digital pollution.

Eco-design is an everyday endeavour at La Plage, which continues to renew its commitment to protecting the environment and to encourage positive change at every level of the publishing industry.

Hachette Éducation Secondaire won the Trophée de la Création Audio (Audio Creation Award).

This award recognizes the originality, creativity and hard work behind audio production. Hachette Éducation won for its podcast L’Écume des œuvres, which provides all-new, immersive audio content to introduce young people to literary masterpieces and help high school students study for the Baccalauréat.

The podcast launched in 2022 and was co-created with author, comic scriptwriter and French teacher Guillaume Plassans, who enjoys a significant following on social media (@PoPésie).

It includes nine episodes on Manon Lescaut by L’Abbé Prévost, La Peau de chagrin by Balzac and Sido and Les Vrilles de la vigne by Colette, which were all part of the Baccalauréat curriculum.  Each book is the topic of three 15-minute episodes. And each episode enjoys a carefully crafted script read by several voice actors for optimal effect and its own soundscape for an immersive experience. The series aims to make it easier for pupils to understand the books and memorize key concepts.

The podcast provides a new way to work on the books from the French curriculum and enhance a collection of workbooks and digital textbooks published by Hachette Éducation in 2022. New episodes are already scheduled for release in 2023.
